2021 – the ultimate year of the ‘I Am and I Will’ campaign – shows us that our actions have an impact on everyone around us, within our neighbourhoods, communities and cities. And that more than ever, our actions are also being felt across borders and oceans. This year is a reminder of the enduring power of cooperation and collective action. When we choose to come together, we can achieve what we all wish for: a healthier, brighter world without cancer. Together, all of our actions matter. World Cancer Day is observed to spread awareness, inspire change and reduce the global impact of cancer. The day is celebrated every year on 4th of February and hence marking the ultimate year of the ‘I Am and I Will’ campaign which began in 2019. The aim to observe World Cancer Day is to reduce misconceptions about cancer and to help people in getting the right information about it. It also offers a chance to make an impact in the betterment of the life of cancer patients and survivors.

The leading cause of deaths around the globe happens to be cancer. The top cancers that affect the Indian population are lung, breast, cervical, head and neck and colorectal cancer (CRC). So, it is important to understand each type of cancer and how it impacts the body. On World Cancer Day, everyone comes together with an agenda to achieve a healthier and brighter world free of cancer.

World Cancer Day 2021 theme – I am and I will

The theme for World Cancer Day 2021 is ‘I Am and I Will.’ It is a multi-year campaign that began in 2019 and this year will mark the last year. The theme represents an empowering call-to-action urging personal commitment, it also represents the power of action taken now to have a positive impact on the future. The theme clearly focuses on “together all our actions matter”.

History of World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day was originated at the first World Summit Against Cancer in 2000. It was held in Paris and was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

According to a report of the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 out of 10 Indians develop cancer and almost 16 million cases of the disease are registered annually. Meanwhile, globally 1 out of 6 people lose their lives due to cancer every year. It is an initiative started by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). This day is observed annually to spread awareness about the life-threatening disease. This year’s theme ‘I am and I will’ promotes the positive message for the cancer patients to have the courage to battle this life-threatening condition.

Causes of cancer

There is not a solid cause for developing cancer. But we need to maintain and safeguard ourselves from certain factors like toxic lifestyle habits to reduce the risk of cancer. Take a look at some of the most common things which increase the chances of developing cancer:

  • Tobacco: Nicotine found in tobacco can increase your risk of cancer.
  • Foods: Foods which have added preservatives, pesticides and other harmful ingredients causes the risk of cancer. Try to avoid such foods as much as possible.
